Knowing God

(Through Jesus in the Gospel of John)

Millions, even a billion know about God, but few know God on personal terms.

I. Introduction

Q: What are some different views of God?
- Grandfather in the sky.
- Santa Claus.
- Puritan view - dangling man by a thread over Hell.
- Distorted Father figure.
- Clockmaker - created, but uninvolved.

Correct view of God.

John 1:1-2,14,18
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was with God in the beginning.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

Jesus Christ, the Word, is God’s communication to us.

Jesus became flesh so that we might understand God.

Jesus has made God known.

To know God is to have a relationship with him.

John 14:6
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Jesus is the only way to God.

Great quote : “As the way, Jesus is the answer to man’s sin; as the truth; he is the answer to man’s ignorance; and as life, he is the answer to man’s mortality”.

II. Jesus is the Way

Jesus is the answer to man’s sin.

John 8:34-36
34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Jesus sets man free from the guilt and power of sin.

Q: How has Jesus set you free from sin?

III. Jesus is the Truth

John 8:31-32
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

As we put into practice the teachings of Jesus, we will know the truth.

John 12:48-50
48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.
49 For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it.
50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say."

Jesus’ words need to be our standard of life.

IV. Jesus is the Life

John 11:25-26
25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;
26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

In Jesus you can have life after death.

John 10:10
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

In Jesus you can have an abundant life.

Q: How has Jesus improved the quality of your life?

V. Conclusion

Everyone in this room needs to know God!

Q: Do you know God?

John 8:19
Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also."

The way to get to know God is to know Jesus.
